Imagine the thrill of a galloping thunderstorm, the smell of ozone, the split‑second decision that makes the difference between a win and a washout. That split‑second? You missed it because you didn’t have a system. Here’s the deal: without reliable notes, you’re flying blind, and the competition will eat your dust.

First off, ditch the generic notebook. Grab a rugged, water‑proof field pad. Look: a 3 × 5 index card is a nightmare for complex data. A small, spiral‑bound logbook with lined pages and a built‑in ruler wins every time. Pair it with a sturdy ballpoint pen that won’t bleed through—no fancy gel, just pure ink that survives rain.

Digital lovers, listen. A voice recorder clipped to your jacket is a game‑changer. The raw audio can be transcribed later, but the immediacy of speaking beats scribbling under a wind‑howling track. Just make sure you have a spare battery.

Three sections, no more. A – “Arena”: name the track, surface type, weather. B – “Beast”: horse name, age, sire, trainer, past performance trends. C – “Clash”: your observation of the race dynamics—pace, position shifts, jockey cues. That’s it. Keep each block under a dozen lines. Anything more, and you’ll lose focus.

And here is why the “ABC” wins: it aligns with how the brain processes information—categorical, sequential, crisp. You’ll locate any datum in under three seconds when you need it.

Do not wait until the post‑race cocktail hour. As soon as the gates close, pull out that pad. Capture the first 30 seconds—the break, the early fractions. Then, at the halfway point, note the mid‑race tactics. Finally, when the finish line blurs, jot down the closing sprint and any anomalies.

Pro tip: if you’re on a tight schedule, use shorthand. “S” for “speed,” “T” for “turn,” “R” for “recovery.” Your future self will thank you.
