The rule? You share the odds, you share the stake, you share the profit. Simple in theory, brutal in practice.

How the forecast bet works

Forecast is a two-dog exacta. You pick the first and second place in order. If a dead heat occurs in either position, the payout shrinks. The formula: total odds divided by the number of dogs sharing the place, then multiplied by your stake.

Example with real numbers

Dog A @ 5.0, Dog B @ 8.0. You stake £10 on A-B. If A and C finish together for first, you get 5.0 ÷ 2 = 2.5 odds. Your return = £10 × 2.5 = £25. No extra magic.

Why most bettors ignore the rule

Because it feels like a cheat. By the way, the odds you see on screen are the “full-price” odds. The dead-heat divisor is hidden until the result is declared. This leads to surprise, frustration, and a lot of “why didn’t I win?” emails.

Key things to watch

Look: the race card will list any declared dead-heat chances before the start. If you see “DH” next to a dog, expect a split payout. And here is why you should adjust your stake – treat the potential divisor as a built-in commission.

How to protect yourself

First, calculate the worst-case scenario before you place the bet. Second, use the dead heat rules greyhound forecast bets UK guide to run quick mental math. Third, consider hedging with a simple win bet on the favourite; it cushions the blow if the dead heat bites.

Bottom line

Dead heats shrink your forecast winnings dramatically. Treat them as a tax on your exacta. Adjust your stake, run the numbers, and you’ll stop losing sleep over split finishes. Get the habit, and the market will start working for you.

What the dead heat actually means When two dogs cross the line together, the bookmakers call it a dead heat – a split-finish that throws most casual punters off balance.
